Computer Art

Over the years I've done a (very) small amount of computer-generated art using a programs such as Povray and GIMP. Actually I don't know if you can really call it "art" since I didn't actually draw anything. All I did was define 3-D scenes in Povray's language or use a series of GIMP editing commands to manipulate images.

If you're interested in high quality computer-generated images to use as desktop wallpaper, I highly recommend these sites. These guys are extremely talented.

These first two images were done in Povray and are representations of the dorm suites where I lived during my junior and senior years in college (94-95 and 95-96). I was very pleased at the time with how accurate they looked (well, the suites were never that clean...). As you can see, I got a little more involved with the image of my senior year suite, mapping Chris's head onto a sphere and putting it in a big fishbowl. The beer bottle and camera were objects that other people created and I simply imported into my scene.

Here is the Povray source file for the first image.

In late 1996/early 1997 I created a couple of images for Dantom International to use on their website. They were also done completely in Povray. The first image shows a network cable to illustrate that the company produces network games. The second image uses medeival weapons to spell the name of their first product, DUNG. Actually I didn't really know what to make the G out of, so I just put it in a magical crystal ball.
In 1998 I used GIMP to create a nifty striped Van Halen logo for the Van Halen Mailing List website which I maintain. Here it is available as the original wallpaper-size image as well as in alternate color combinations.

In October 1998 I used GIMP to create this collage of images from Van Halen's Oct. 2 and 3 shows at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Most of the images were taken by friends of mine who were also at the shows. Makes a nice wallpaper...
